Most of Shemlan's infrastructure was heavily damaged during Lebanon's long civil war. Since the end of the war, Shemlani's have begun to rebuild their beloved village.

Shemlan has seen a dramatic increase in real estate development since in the past ten years. Three condominium buildings named "Shemlan Residence" were build in the lower end of the village, offering luxury living with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea. The top of the village, bordering Kayfoun, was dotted with expensive chalet's build by royalty from the Gulf states looking to spend their summer away from the desert.

In between, Shemlan has seen its old villagers and fix thier homes. Along with this came repaving of roads and currently, a more advanced water, electric and telecommunications equipment is being installed. Some of these projects are carried out with the help of USAID in Lebanon. These projects include:

  • Construction of 300m Water Canals
  • Construction of 464m Waste Water Canals
  • Potable Water Project
  • Preventative Health Center
  • Rehabilitation of 533m Agricultural Road

The heart of Shemlan, both geographically and emotionally, is Saydet Shemlan (Our Lady of Shemlan) Maronite Church. The church is in dire need of renovation to accomodate Shemlan's faithful that attend mass each week. Fundraisers are held to try and raise funds for the church. Some of the faithful, who are unable to donate money, help the church by giving their time and expertise in the form painting the church, tending to the church grounds, and other activities. If one building in Shemlan is to be renovated and restored, Saydet Shemlan should be a first priority.
